Theodorus chartularius PB Seal. Circa 5th-7th century AD. θЄOΔѠP૪ XAPT૪ΛAP in four lines / RUDЄRATORUM in three lines. 6.67g, 19mm, 12h.
Condition as seen. An intriguing bilingual seal.
The Greek obverse legend of this seal refers to a Theodorus who held the office of chartularius. The Latin legend on the reverse possibly reads as 'ruderatorum'. In Latin, ruderatorum might refer to the following:
1) Those who are covered or paved with broken stone
2) Those who are covered with debris
3) Those who are stony or rocky
The exact meaning is unclear however, it probably refers to an office held by the owner of this seal. There are no other examples of such an office in the Dumbarton Oaks collection of seals and thus, it may be unrecorded.
