Gupta Dynasty, Samudragupta (335-370 AD), Gold Dinar, "King and Queen" type (Lichchhavayah), issued in the memory of his parents Chandragupta I and Kumaradevi, Obv: king standing at right facing the queen standing at left, both having halo on their head, Brahmi legend "Kumaradevi Sri" at the left field behind queen, "Chandra" and "Gupta" in the right field divided by crescent standard which is held by king's left hand, Rev: goddess Durga seated in the paralambapasana on a "recumbent Lion facing left", holding cornucopia and pasha, Brahmi legend at right field "(Li)chchhavayah", tamgha at top left, 7.56g, 21.50mm, (variant of Altekar, Bayana Hoard # Pl. I-4/TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class I-Var. B.5), choice very fine, Extremely Rare.
King is shown on the obverse wearing a royal suit with coronet on his head in his imperial appearance, his hand is shown as if he is applying a tilak to queen's forehead, a container like box (sindoor-dani) is visible just above his hand, moon like crescent is also visible between the heads of both king and queen. Lichchhavayah was the type issued to commemorate the marriage alliance of Chandragupta I and the princess of Lichchhavi tribe. A rare combination for the type in admirable condition
