FRANCE. "Normandie" Inaugural Voyage Bronze Medal, 1935. By: Jean Vernon at the Paris Mint. MINT STATE.
68 mm, Maier-333. Commemorating the maiden voyage of the Normandie from Le Havre to New York. Obverse: Ship steaming left upon the ocean; Reverse: Female figure standing left, raising hands and holding bridle; in background, hippocamp rearing left above the waves. Edge: BRONZE. Highly attractive bronze surfaces.

Presented to passengers on the inaugural voyage, this wondrous Art Deco piece is one in a long and popular line of highly artistic medals presented for similar purposes by various French fleets. The Normandie was part of the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique's tourist fleet. She caught fire and capsized in 1942, and was ultimately scrapped in 1946.
