D&H-1047. Obverse: TRIED FOR HIGH TREASON / J.H. TOOKE ESQr, bust of Tooke right; Reverse: NOT GUILTY / SAY THE JURY / EQUAL JUDGES OF / LAW AND FACT / COUNSEL / HON T ERSKINE / V GIBBS ESQr. Edge: Plain. Although it has a slightly soft strike, the piece at hand is in an exceptional state of preservation and retains mint red around the legends.

Famous for soliciting funds to aid the relatives of the Americans "murdered by the King's troops at Lexington and Concord," John Horne Tooke was one of the Revolution's most prominent British defenders. As the legend writes, he was acquitted after being tried for support of the American cause.
