PERU. Peru-Bolivian Confederation. Open Work Silver Callao Fortress Military Medal, "1836". ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
Commemorating the Siege and Capturing of Callao Fortress. Obverse: Turret being scaled by infantryman; RENDIDO / EL CALLAO / AL VALOR / SIN EJEMPLO in four lines; all within wreathed border; Reverse: EN 19 / DE / ENERO / DE 1836 [sic]. The storming and subsequent capture of Callao fortress occurred in 1826 rather than 1836, meaning that the date on this RARE medal is an error or possibly meant to mark the 10 year anniversary of the event. Nevertheless, a seldom encountered piece that is mentioned in the holdings of the ANS (see Numismatic Notes & Monographs 56 [1932]).
