Pamphylia, Aspendus. Stater; Pamphylia, Aspendus; c. 400 BC, Stater, 10.67g. SNG Cop-436 (as Sillyum). Obv: Two wrestlers engaged; the one on l. holds r. knee and chest of opponent, while the one on r. grasps r. shoulder of opponent. Rx: Slinger wearing short chiton, discharging sling to r., between triskeles behind him and statue of Athena on base before him; around, legend ESTFE?I[IVS]. Rare with the wrestlers grasping each other's bodies not just arms, and with statue of Athena in reverse field; all in dotted square within incuse square. Possibly only the fourth specimen recorded, the other three being Journ. Int. d'Arch. Num. VI, 1903, pl. XII.6; SNG Copenhagen 436; and Leu Web 4, 24 June 2018, lot 318.For an extensively large and consistent series, it is quite rare to find a coin that is different. Wrestlers engaged on obverse with rare symbol, though weak on reverse. VF
