Gordian III. Antoninianus; Gordian III; 238-244 AD, Rome, 239 AD, Antoninianus, 4.16g. RIC-35, C-48 (M. Griolet). Obv: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG Bust radiate, draped, cuirassed r. Rx: CONCORDI - A AVG Concordia seated l. holding patera and single cornucopia. Apparently quite rare with a single rather than double cornucopia in the reverse type; Cohen cites this variant from a private collection, and it was apparently not represented among the 49 examples of this type in the Eauze hoard, nor in the specialized Gordian III collection of George His as described by C. Clay, Gemini IV, 2008, pp. 105-114. The reverse of our coin is in addition very carefully engraved, with much detail, for example in the fruits emerging from the cornucopia, Concordia's facial features and hair, and the dots connected by lines that decorate the legs and cross-piece of the throne..
