Caesar in victory on horse/Enemy head presented on platter to Caesar; Caesar looking away The Battle of Pharsalus was the decisive battle of Caesar's Civil War in 48 BC at Pharsalus in central Greece. Gaius Julius Caesar and his allies formed up opposite the army of the republic under the command of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus ("Pompey the Great"). Pompey with an army about twice as large as Caesar's, wanted to delay battle thinking the enemy would eventually surrender from hunger and exhaustion. However, Pompey felt pressure by the senators and his officers to get the job done and he reluctantly engaged in battle and suffered an overwhelming defeat. Pompey himself survived by fleeing, disguised as an ordinary citizen. However, Pompey was later assassinated in Ptolemaic Egypt by orders of Ptolemy XIII.
