Carolingians, uncertain king (late 8th-9th century) AV Solidus/Mancusus. Uncertain mint, dated AH "159" (i.e. AH "157"). Imitating an Abbasid issue of Caliph al-Mansur. Kalima in three lines across field; Qur'an IX, 33 around / Continuation of kalima in three lines across field; date formula around. Ilisch Group I, no. III.2 (same dies); MEC I, p. 330; cf. (for prototype) Album 212. 4.07g, 19mm, 2h.

Very Fine; scrape to rev. Very Rare.

From a European Dealer.

We suggest that the date AH "159" was rather the result from copying "157" incorrectly than from using a different prototype coin, as there was a typological dependence on the less crude main group of AH "157" imitations, which would be hard to explain if another original Abbasid dinar of AH 159.
