This delightful tetradrachm, with a beautiful archaic smile, was struck before the Athenian general Perikles took possession of the Delian League's treasury, moving it from the island of Delos to Athens in 454 BC. Once Athens began using the funds of the league for their own purposes, and the output of tetradrachms increased dramatically, more standardised features homogenised the Athenian tetradrachm into the well-known coin we recognise today.
