South Africa, Transvaal Republic. Thomas François Burgers AV Pond. Birmingham mint, 1874. Fine Beard. THOMAS FRANÇOIS BURGERS, bare head left; 1874 below / ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK, flagged arms above banner; eagle above. KM 1.2; Friedberg 1.

NGC graded XF Details, "removed from jewelry, repaired". The 'repair' appears confined to a tiny patch of smoothing between FRANÇOIS Band BURGERS.

The famed Burgers Pond, with the portrait of President Thomas François Burgers, was struck only in 695 examples. The dies for this extremely rare issue were engraved by Leonard C Wyon and the resulting gold coins were struck by Ralph Heaton and Sons of Birmingham, who had the order to produce these coins from gold mined in the Lydenburg district. This was the first source of gold mined in South Africa. Few of the small number ever produced have survived, and many are heavily damaged from their common use in jewellery; the present specimen is as such an excellent example of this very rare type with very limited circulation or damage.
