Suetonius claims that Octavian had some peculiar superstitions, and particularly feared thunderstorms – apparently due to an incident during his campaign in 26-25 BC against the Cantabrians, for during a march by night, a flash of lightning grazed his litter and struck the slave dead who was carrying a torch before him. On account of this narrow escape, he vowed the construction of the shrine to Jupiter the Thunderer which was inaugurated in 22 BC, located at the entrance to the Capitol.
