Hadrian AR Denarius. Rome, AD 134-138. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, bare head right / ITALIA, Italia standing left, holding sceptre and cornucopiae. RIC 307; BMCRE 850; RSC 867. 3.25g, 19mm, 6h.

Very Fine; old cabinet tone.

Acquired from Stack's Bowers Galleries (& Ponterio), January 2013;
Ex Robert O. Ebert Collection.

This coin is part of Hadrian's Travel series throughout the Roman Empire. His tours apparently served to inspect the borders of the empire which had experienced a significant expansion under Trajan. Since Italia did not have any borders or outposts, it was more likely to have been used as start or return point of the travel series.
