The Latin legend on this coin's obverse, seen on other pieces as well, clearly asserted Charles I's faith that he would ultimately be spared by the Puritan opposition. It translates to mean 'Whilst I Live, I Hope'. The motto was put on his Pontefract coins after he had been captured and imprisoned. The other side's motif (crown over CR for Carolus Rex) expresses the king's indomitable belief that he was divinely chosen to rule.
