"Washington Eccleston" bronze Medal ND (1805) MS63 NGC, Baker-85. 76mm. A superb chocolate brown medal with a lightly pitted reverse from the original dies. Obverse: armored, confident high relief bust of Washington right. Reverse: Indian with bow and arrow, surrounded by concentric rings bearing laudatory inscriptions. A vertical die crack through WAS OURS is also seen on the Rulau/Fuld plate piece. A fantastic medal issued by Daniel Eccleston of Lancaster, England. The dies were cut by Thomas Webb, a British engraver who worked from 1804-1827. The piece was issued with a subtle twist of satire. The picture of Washington in a heavy suit of amour is a 'singular conceit' as noted by Baker. On the reverse the Indian in the center is surrounded by the words THE LAND WAS OURS. The medal appears to be more of a commentary of the expropriation by colonists of Indian lands than a tribute to Washington.
