CILICIA, Mallus. Trajan Decius. 249-251 AD. Æ. Medallion, Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Decius, as founder, leads yoke of oxen right, turning to present statue of Marsyas to the Tyche of Mallus, who is crowned by Amphilochus; boar in exergue. SNG Levante 1291 (this coin). Good VF, dark green patina with patches of red-brown. Rare foundation scene. ($500) Amphilochus was one of the Epigoni, sons of the Seven against Thebes. After the Trojan War he visited a number of areas along the coast of Asia Minor, being celebrated as the founder of several cities, including Mallus. He was killed by Apollo at Soli.
