Though uncertain, it is tempting to believe the Demokritos for whom the present coin was struck to be the pre-Socratic philosopher primarily remembered today for his formulation of an atomic theory of the universe. Born in the city of Abdera c. 460 BC and mentored by Leukippos, Demokritos the Philosopher is said to have lived to the age of 90, dying in c. 370 BC, and is considered by many to be the "father of modern science" (P. Gossin, Encyclopedia of Literature and Science, 2002).
