George VI. 1936-1952. Brass dodecagonal threepence (12 sides). 6.77 gm. 21 mm. First issue (1937-1948). 1946, one of the two rarities in this short series. His bare head left; GEORGIVS VI. D: G: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP. around / A thrift plant with three blossoms; THREE PENCE around; 1946 below. S. 4112. Peck 2388 (R). Good Extremely Fine; lustrous; attractive Unc in hand but some "bagginess" on the portrait. This denomination was introduced to "lessen the enormous weight of bronze coin handled daily by the banks, large business firms and other big users...." There was a silver 3d denomination but it was considered too small for convenient use. (Peck, p 513).The "thrift plant" is a flowering plant familiar to British gardeners.
