GREAT BRITAIN. Rev. William Knibb (1803-1845). Emancipation in the West Indies. White metal. 22.22 gm. 41 mm. Manufactured by J. Davis (Birmingham). Bust of Knibb right; REVD WILLIAM KNIBB JAMAICA around / A monument with an inscription in the center: DEO GLORIA ERECTED BY SONS OF AFRICA TO COMMEMORATE THE BIRTH DAY OF THEIR FREEDOM AUG 1. 1838. Around the edge: ETHIOPIA SHALL SOON STRETCH OUT HER HANDS UNTO GOD. 68 PSALM 31v. BHM 1878 (RRR). Extremely Fine; mostly lustrous and fresh; holed at top. Knibb was a strong abolitionist who ultimately died in Jamaica at a relatively young age as he fought for the abolition of slavery.
