KINGS OF CAPPADOCIA. Ariarathes VI Epiphanes Philopator. Circa 118-106 B.C. AR tetradrachm. 16.45 gm. 28 mm. In the name and types of Antiochos VII of Syria. Mint II, emission 10. Diademed head of Antiochos VII right / Athena Nikephoros standing left, holding Nike, monogram above A to left, A to right; all within wreath. Krengel & Lorber 355-367 (A42/unlisted reverse die). SC 2146.4. HGC 9, 1068. Very Fine; fresh, well centered, and pleasing; die breaks on obverse (typical of this die; the example in Krengel & Lorber is a later die state).
Cappadocian imitations of Antiochos VII, though closely adhering to the design and controls of the Syrian coinage, become somewhat more rudimentary in later emissions (such as this coin). The coarse style of Athena on the reverse is a particular giveaway.
