Claudius. AD 41-54. Fourrée Denarius (18mm, 3.14 g, 9h). Rome mint. Struck AD 51-52. Laureate head right / DE BRITANN on architrave of triumphal arch surmounted by equestrian statue left between two trophies. RIC I – (no. 15 in original volume); von Kaenel Type 47; BMCRE p. 174 note ‡; RSC 24. Toned, a few scratches and marks, breaks in plating. VF. Rare.

From the Northwest Collection.

On p. 125 of RIC I (1984 edition), the first footnote * states: "See BMCRE p. 174 n. ‡, for the occurrence of this late obv. legend with earlier reverses on coins which, frequently plated, are probably ancient forgeries." Although referring to another late legend for Claudius, this statement holds true for the present type.
