Mysia, Lampsakos. 4th-3rd centuries B.C. AR diobol (11 mm, 1.12 g, 10 h). Janiform female heads / ΛΑΜ[Ψ]-A, head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet; behnd, A. SNG BN 1182ff. Minor deposits. Very fine.

Lampsakos was strategically situated on the Hellespont and was famous for producing men of letters and philosophers, including Anaxagoras, who was the first to bring philosophy to Athens. He returned to Lampaskos to escape an Athenian charge of impiety and the citizens of his home city erected an altar to Nous (Mind) and Pistis (Truth) in his honor. These may be the deities represented by the janiform head on this coin.
