Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1880-S MS61 NGC, Sydney mint, KM6, S-3855. Inverted "A" for "V" in VICTORIA. The single finest graded example of this varietal rarity by either NGC or PCGS. Aglow with shimmering luster, crisply struck with only light marks in the fields, lightly toned to an apricot hue. Previously, the best of this type we handled was an AU58 specimen which realized $5,500 hammer in our January 2013 sale; at two grade points higher and almost seven years later, this offering is likely to elicit a much stronger response from serious Sovereign collectors.
