Victoria gold Sovereign 1879 MS61 NGC, KM752, S-3856A, Marsh 90 (R4). Absolutely outstanding; the finest graded example of the key 1879 London Sovereign, and the sole specimen to have graded as Mint State! Just 20,013 Sovereigns were struck in this year, and almost all saw heavy circulation leading to the best available being low-to-mid Almost Uncirculated specimens. Somehow, this offering managed to survive with absolutely no wear and limited handling, still fully lustrous and bold. The reverse strike is exceptionally sharp with excellent detail to even the most minute elements of St. George's depiction. An AU55 example we offered in our September 2017 sale realized $13,000 hammer; as such this MS61 representative will surely elicit even more heated bidding before it takes its place in the finest collection of British Sovereigns.
