NORWAY. Eirik II Magnusson. 1280-1299. AR Penny (20mm, 1.07 g, 12h). Struck after 1285. + ЄRIC MAGn : RЄX : n(OR)VЄG, coat of arms / (CR)VX SCA IhV XPI, cross with lis in each quarter. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 308; Schive p. 73 and pl. IX, 24–6; ABH 29.1. Deeply toned. Near EF. Exceptional for issue. Very rare.

'Norwegian coinage in the thirteenth century started from a lower point than that of most other countires in western Europe, but in the last decade of the century a serious attempt was made to bring it into line with the others.... Eric the Priest-Hater (1280-99) and Haakon V Magnusson (Duke 1280-99,King 1299-1319), who divided the kingdom between them [issued] both sterlings and small groats... Unfortunately we know nothing of the artist responsible for these admirable but very short-lived coins.' Grierson, p.130-31
