Scotland, Ayrshire, 'Pattern Eighteenpence', 1799, in silver, struck from refurbished Halfpenny dies by John Milton for Colonel William Fullarton, armoured bust of George, Prince of Wales, with title of Seneschal of Scotland left, rev. en médaille, four crowned shields cruciform, Garter in centre, plumes in angles, edge plain, 28mm., 7.98g (Atkins p.299; Davis 5; DH 5), once dipped, otherwise a bold extremely fine with flashes of original brilliance, rare.
Most Fullarton pieces, including all the silver and gold strikings, are restrikes by Matthew Young. The originals are all in copper, and because there was doubt expressed at the time as to whether the Prince of Wales was authorised to sanction the use of the Royal Arms on coins, they were not put into circulation. This piece is sometimed referred to as 'Eighteenpence', but it is in fact a silver striking from the dies used to produce the Halfpenny. The die break below the Prince's bust is a feature of the Halfpenny obverse die.
