Henry of Anjou (c. 1150), Penny, Bristol, Godimer (?), 1.02g, 4h, h[e]n[r]ic[vs rex], crowned bust right, holding sceptre, the crown with high, square, sides and decorated with three fleur de lis and a row of pearls (as Stephen's 'Watford' type 1), rev. +g[...]mer: on: br[...], quadrilateral on cross fleury (as Henry I type 15) (EMC 2019.0213 this coin; N.940; S.1329), buckled, as found and with no attempt to straighten the coin, much of the legend and other details clear and so very fine for this extremely rare type, an important find, providing a new mint and a new moneyer for this type.

Dr. Martin Allen in recording this coin, commented: 'This provides a new mint (Bristol) for the Angevin coinage of South-West England in the name of King Henry, with an obverse derived from Stephen type 1 and a reverse from Henry I type 15. The reverse seems to read +g[ ]mer:on:br[ ], in which case the moneyer's name is probably Godimer, which is a new name at Bristol. Coins of this type (North 940), which should probably be dated to the 1140s, were also struck at Gloucester, Hereford and Cirencester.'
