East India Company, Regal Coinage, William IV (1830-1837). Pattern Silver ½ Rupee, 1835. Bombay. (SW 1.5). Once lacquered, hairlines. In NGC holder graded PF 62. Extremely rare. Value $30,000 - UP
As there were no working dies from Calcutta, a Bombay mint engraver, whose surname was Merlen, made Rupee and ½ Rupee dies, and one or two examples of each coin were struck with these dies. They were not accepted as a possible design for circulation coins and are thus today quite rare.
