THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid-late 2nd century BC. AR Hemidrachm (13mm, 1.82 g, 5h). Poly–, magistrate. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet with griffin on the bowl; monogram behind / ΘEΣ/ΣAΛΩN, bridled horse trotting right; monogram of ΠΟΛΥ (or ΠΟΛI) below. BCD Thessaly II 816 (hammer $800); HGC 4, 219. Lightly toned, some porosity. VF. Extremely rare, possibly the third known.
From the BCD Collection.
This is a fraction of extreme rarity, and until the BCD sale, was never published or offered for sale. It must have been part of the initial denominational scheme of the Late Hellenistic Confederacy, before the mint settled down to striking just Apollo drachms and Zeus staters.
