MERINID: Abu Al-Hasan 'Ali (1331-1351), silver square dirham (0.83g), Fas (Fez) mint, AH 731-752. Legends identical to Almohad square dirhams, except the phrase "al-mahdiyyu imamuna" ("Al-Mahdi is our Imam"), which was replaced with "al-qur'anu imamuna" ("the Quran is our Imam"). Hohertz-266. Fine to very fine. Scarce.

As opposed to the following lots, this specimen carries a mint name, which is far scarcer than the already rare mintless type.

The added phrase "the Qur'an is our Imam" clearly shows the rejecting stance of the Merinids towards the Almohads' claim to the caliphate. This dirham was minted in a crucial period characterized by the decline of the Almohads and ultimately the division of their realms between the Merinids, Ziyanids, and Hafsids.

Estimate: 100-150
