MERINID: Abu Al-Hasan 'Ali (1331-1351), silver square dirham (0.90g), AH 731-752. Legends identical to Almohad square dirhams, except the phrase "al-mahdiyyu imamuna" ("Al-Mahdi is our Imam"), which was replaced with "al-qur'anu imamuna" ("the Quran is our Imam"). Hohertz-263. Fine. Scarce.
The added phrase "the Qur'an is our Imam" clearly shows the rejecting stance of the Merinids towards the Almohads' claim to the caliphate. This dirham was minted in a crucial period characterized by the decline of the Almohads and ultimately the division of their realms between the Merinids, Ziyanids, and Hafsids.
