The serrated edge, resembling "bottlecap" coins of earlier civilizations, is a very odd occurrence for Islamic coins of this period. The purpose seems to be purely decorative, and it does not seem to serve another function, such as protecting against clippings, since that was not a notable issue for bronze Abbasid falus.
