AGHLABID: Ibrahim I Ibn Al-Aghlab (800-811), silver dirham (2.65g), Ifriqiya mint, AH 196(?). Citing Musa in obverse field. Reverse the prophet cited as "nabiu rahma" ("prophet of mercy"). A-435.3 (RR). Choice very fine to extremely fine. Very rare.
The date on this piece is oddly spelled. The last letter is clearly not the letter waw but rather the letter 'ayn that extends downward towards the word "la" in the last line of the obverse field, as is clearer with another example appearing in St James's auction 34 (lot 623), also possibly misidentified as AH 196. The only sensible possibilities would be AH 194 or a posthumous issue of AH 197, both of which would be unpublished since the only recorded dates for Ibrahim dirhams citing Musa are AH 195 and 196.
Estimate: 180-220
