Mauritius Government of Mauritius 5 Rupees 30.8.1909 Pick 16 PMG Very Good 10. An unlisted and certainly rare date is seen on this seldom seen large type. The Mauritian Rupee became the national currency after Indian Rupees became more commonplace than than British Pounds or Mauritian Dollars, which occurred in the late 19th century. Based on the research performed by Owen Linzmayer and described in his Mauritius Chapter of The Banknote Book, Thomas de la Rue prepared 323,000 5 Rupee banknotes that were dispersed between banknotes dated 1907 to 1911. This date is sandwiched in the middle, and displays a serial number within the known range. Ornate text is seen on this uniface type. The back shows some partially obscured notations that appear to be in Western and Chinese characters, which illustrates the racial diversity of Mauritius which predates this banknote. Interesting, rare, and seldom offered.
