South Africa African Banking Corporation Limited, Natal 1 Pound 9.6.1919 Pick UNL (similar to S553a) PMG Choice Fine 15. The African Banking Corporation absorbed the Western Province Bank, The Kaffrarian Colonial Bank, and the Worcester Commercial Bank. It operated throughout South Africa, and is believed to have issued notes in Bloemfontein, Durban, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. It was finally taken over by Standard Bank in 1920. Stunning vignettes of Springbucks grazing on the face, with a map of Africa on the back. The prefix N/1 denotes this example having been issued in Natal, and a very small serial is noticed. This type is marked as unlisted because the Krause catalog lists Pick S553a as issued in Transvaal. There is no sales history available for this variety in issued form, and there are none other graded on the PMG census. It is the first time the cataloger has seen an issued note after three decades of collecting South Africa. Even though this example grades Choice Fine 15, we believe that it presents better than the achieved grade. It is unquestionably of utmost rarity, missing from most decent South African collections, and most likely unique. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/south-africa-african-banking-corporation-limited-natal-1-pound-961919-pick-unl-similar-to-s553a-pmg-choice-fi/a/4021-28384.s?type=CoinArchivesCurrency4021 HID08706262019 © 2019 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
