This initial denomination was introduced in 1917 in response to the need for money of this value, as silver coinage was hoarded in enormous quantities. There are many varieties to this denomination, with this specific note having three important characteristics: Rayed star in watermark, signature of McWatters, and large text at bottom on the back.
