From a Private Japanese Collection. Ex Heritage Auction 3026 (Long Beach, 25 October 2013), lot 23362; S.C. Markoff Collection (Numismatica Ars Classica 62, 6 October 2011), lot 2019.

The fair-haired youth of his generation, Germanicus Julius Caesar was the son of the great general Nero Claudius Drusus and Antonia, the niece of Augustus. He became a peerless soldier, like his father, and was widely admired as a paragon of Roman manly virtues. Like John F. Kennedy, Germanicus' untimely and rather mysterious death in AD 19 won him immortal fame. This copper as, bearing Germanicus' portrait, was struck by his son, Gaius 'Caligula,' after he became emperor in AD 37. A similar coin was also struck by Germanicus' brother Claudius, emperor AD 41-54.
