Mexico
Republic "Hookneck" 8 Reales 1823 Mo-JM MS62 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM-A376.2, DP-Mo01. Flat-Top 3 variety. A remarkable survivor; the single second highest certified specimen of this first-year Republic 8 Reales. Struck slightly off center and with some weakness to the centers (as is usual for the type), yet in general an exceptionally sharp coin in line with its near-choice Mint State grade. Delicate, silvery luster floods the fields and cloaks the devices, the color almost entirely unchanged since striking with minimal toning save for a whitegold ring at the peripheries. Essentially impossible to obtain this well-preserved, the last Mint State example of this variety to appear at auction (graded MS63) realized $11,000 hammer in May 2009. For the discerning collector of Mexican 8 Reales, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
