Maximilian copper "Small Letters" Pattern Peso 1866-Mo MS61 Brown NGC, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn104, Buttrey-45C. A desirable issue from Maximilian's ephemeral reign, made using the same dies as the circulating silver peso but struck in copper, quite possibly in aid of adjusting the dies prior to full production. Some softness is evident to the high points resulting from an inefficient strike as opposed to wear, as this piece appears scarcely handled. The last Mint State offering of this type was graded MS64 and realized $9,500 hammer at our August 2016 sale.
