Ancients
ATTICA. Athens. Ca. 510/500-480 BC. AR tetradrachm (21mm, 17.18 gm, 8h). NGC AU 5/5 - 3/5, Full Crest. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet, the crest box ornamented with chevron pattern / AΘΕ, owl standing right with closed wings, head facing; drooping olive sprig with two leaves and one berry behind, all within incuse square. HGC 4, 1590 (ca. 500/490-485/480 BC). Seltman Groups C, G and M.
A simply fantastic example with incredible archaic style - the careful crest design fully visible, the theta on the reverse engraved with a delightful dotted outer ring, and the stern owl that would later become softer, larger and much more curious in appearance. Both sides strongly struck with perfect centering on the obverse to allow the full crest to be on the nearly round flan.
