Rio de la Plata gold 8 Escudos 1832/1 RA-P MS62 NGC, La Rioja mint, KM21, Fr-2, Onza-1556. A gorgeous rendition of this sensational "Sun Face" type combining shimmering golden fields with pinpoint detailing. Owing both to its admirable design motifs and general rarity, the type continually finds itself highly contested when encountered on auction, virtually regardless of preservation. This example, though, boasts all the hallmarks of aesthetic quality, including a balanced, sharp strike, bright aurous luster, and hints of tangerine tone which engender the greatest sense of age and quality. As noted in previous descriptions for this type, Jansen theorizes that there was only one reverse die for this issue, and it features a small protrusion above and around the "2", meaning the die from 1831 was re-worked for the 1832 date. Therefore, though not listed as such on the insert, we feel that this lot is most accurately described as an 1832/1 overdate.
