George V copper-nickel Specimen Pattern "Kookaburra" Penny 1921 SP64 PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM-Pn22. Type 13. An extremely rare pattern, one of the most distinctive of the 20th century Australian series. The Kookaburra Patterns of 1919-21 were produced in an effort to replace what was considered a bulky minor coinage in bronze. Although the weight was cut in half, the added cost of importing nickel and, strangely enough, of retooling vending machine mechanisms, resulted in the cancelation of the proposed changes to the coinage. This example boasts sublime surfaces, copious satiny luster delicately toned to hints of white gold, every aspect of the design boldly struck up and sharp.
