German New Guinea
German Colony. Wilhelm II gold Proof 20 Mark 1895-A PR64 Cameo NGC, Berlin mint, KM9, J-709, D&S-385. Mintage: 1,500 (for both Proof and Business Strikes). A stunning second gold Proof of the German New Guinea series offered in this auction, representing the largest denomination produced for the colony. The surfaces reveal the consistently sharp detailing that one could only expect from a specially prepared striking, golden brilliance cascading across the open expanses, with a clear cameo contrast achieved between the fields and satiny devices. The only other example we have had the privilege to offer sold four years ago as part of our August ANA Auction (3041), and was recognized by the cataloger as a "world-class coin in all regards". The same can certainly be said for the present offering, which despite certifying only a couple of points lower, exhibits exceptional preservation and aesthetic appeal. Truly marvelous.
