German States
Augsburg. Free City gold Medallic "Liberation" 5 Ducats 1704 MS62 NGC, Forster-85. 29mm. 17.32gm. By P.H. Müller. Struck following the French withdrawal from Augsburg after their defeat at Höchstädt by Prince Eugene of Savoy and the Duke of Marlborough during the War of Spanish Succession, this historical medallic 5 Ducat features a broad view of the city, a clear message of hope and deliverance displayed on the reverse in reference the city being spared the worst in a French attempt to burn it down during their withdrawal. Gold strikings are exceedingly scarce, and this offering, retained in brilliant Mint State condition, is certainly among the finest of the handful, at best, that one might encounter in a lifetime.
