German States
Bavaria. Maximilian I gold 5 Ducat 1640 MS63 PCGS, Munich mint, KM268, Fr-196, Hahn-Unl. Variety with date above city scene. Commemorating the completion of new fortifications around Munich. Very handsomely and luxuriously rendered throughout, some minor striking weakness persisting atop the highest points of the design, though the fields remain studded with die polish and contain a mildly watery finish. Certainly among the most instantly recognized gold issues of Bavaria, this being the penultimate grade yet awarded by PCGS, and a notoriously difficult level to achieve at that for a celebratory type that frequently sees heavy handling and use in jewelry.
