Great Britain
James I (1603-1625) gold Rose Ryal ND (1623-1624) MS62 NGC, Tower mint, Lis mm, Third coinage, S-2632, N-2108. 12.47gm. The finest certified example of this late Ryal - specimens with the 'lis' mintmark appear at auction far less often than other mintmarks such as the spur rowel or rose. Collectors of large English hammered gold will be familiar with the usual hardships these pieces exhibit; nearly every example has been either circulated or otherwise cleaned, pierced or mounted. As such, the present offering is extraordinary for its rich mint luster, crisp designs, minimal handling and overall spectacular eye appeal. Slightly double struck, a trivial edge crack at 8 o'clock and a small scratch on the reverse. In all other respects a perfect example of the type and worthy of inclusion in a top-tier collection of hammered gold.
