George II gold 5 Guineas 1748 UNC Details (Obverse Repaired) NGC, KM586.2, S-3666. The penultimate year for the manufacture of currency 5 Guineas. By the late 1740s, the production standard for these large-size gold pieces had vastly improved, engraving depth perfectly harmonized with the planchet size giving a uniformly sharp strike and superb visual appeal. This representative is no exception, George's portrait beautifully rendered and ever-so-slightly matte in contrast to the luminous fields behind. The planchet color is a rich, aged gold, a light russet toning shrouding the crisp devices; the certified 'repair' takes the form of skillful smoothing to the King's cheek, work which provides no significant visual detriment whatsoever.
