An absolutely extraordinary set! Grade-conscious collectors of British Proof gold will be very familiar with the 1902 matte Proofs produced for Edward VII's coronation, and the problems they face. The sandblasting effect was only ever used for this one set as the official finish, in all others reserved solely for special photographic purposes. This could be, partially, as the process left many specimens of the 1902 coins with swirling hairlines in the fields; an as-made effect, but sadly one which almost always leads to their being conservatively graded. As such, the present offering is wholly remarkable. Three out of the four coins (the Half Sovereign, Sovereign and 2 Pounds) bear the highest grade level for the type assigned by either NGC or PCGS, whilst the 5 Pounds is but one half grade point lower than the finest certified. Careful inspection reveals why. Nowhere to be seen are the significant hairlines, and instead the viewer is met by a sea of calm matte finish of bright butter-gold color, matching across all four denominations. Further, not one of the coins has seen improper handling since, seemingly treated with the reverence that such outliers deserve. We have only sold one comparable set, identically graded save for the 5 Pounds which was PR66, offered at our January 2015 sale where it realized $32,000 hammer. We have no doubts that in today's far heightened market, this exquisite quartet will attract immense interest.
