Naples & Sicily. Charles I d'Anjou (1266-1285) gold Saluto d'Oro ND (1266-1278) MS65 NGC, Naples mint, Fr-808, Biaggi-1624 (R), Bellesia-1, MIR-18 (R2). +KAROL' (AR ligate) • SCD' (mark of contraction above C) • DЄI • GRA (mark of contraction above R) • IЄRL' • SICIL' • RЄX, halved shield with the arms of Jerusalem and France, flanked to left and right by two stars and rosette, above by two stars and crescent / +AVЄ • GRACIA • PLЄnA • DOmInVS • TЄCVm, scene of the Annunciation; vase containing lily in foreground. An extremely impressive emission of the first Capetian ruler of Naples and Sicily, charismatic in even the most minute of details, with the scene of the Annunciation particularly so, and the Gothic lettering rendered in the utmost elegant and delicate fashion. Only minorly off-center and not suffering from it in the slightest. A true gem of a coin.
