Venice. Francesco Corner gold Zecchino ND (1656) AU58 PCGS, KM254 (Rare), Fr-1324, Paolucci-100.1 (R5), Mont-2329 (R5), Bellesia-149 (R/4), CNI-VIIIa.22. 3.48gm. FRANC • CORN | • S | • M • | V | E | N | E | T •, Doge kneeling left before nimbate figure of St. Mark (standing right), receiving banner; DVX (stacked) to right / SIT • T • XPE • DAT • Q • TV | REGIS ISTE DVCA, Christ in glory (surrounded by mandorla) standing facing, fold of robe in left hand, raising right in benediction, surrounded by 16 stars. An extraordinarily rare emission of Venice's shortest-reigning doge, quite handsomely struck and centered on a lustrous flan with full outer boarder and not the least waviness. Ascending to the dignity of doge in the midst of the Turkish war, Francesco Corner reigned for a paltry 19 days, 8 of which, according to Paolucci, "were spent in bed with the fever and stomach pains which brought on his death." All of his coins are notoriously elusive, the gold especially prized, with just 5 examples of his Zecchinos certified across NGC and PCGS combined. This is the sole example we have ever offered, and is sure to not go unnoticed by the experienced collector of Italian coinage.
